Below is the new ad for H&M showing puff faced Lana Del Rey singing the 1954 classic "Blue Velvet". Shes not wearing blue or velvet but I suppose that's artistic license. Lana? This is a good gig for her, with the vacant stair and exaggerated features she makes a perfect hanger.
Many musicians have become 'the face' of a clothing line or product. Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez plug Walmart, Bryan Ferry and his son did an ad for H&M last year. Music and fashion seem to be a win win. You already love the celeb and the theory is you want to look just like them so here is your big chance.
They used to say that rock stars dated models but now musicians are so airbrushed and stylized they ARE models. Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20, modeled jeans and Burberry has chosen numerous Brit pop stars to stand and smile.
Mark Wahlberg modeled for Calvin Klein, Samantha Fox was the face..no wait the chest? of many garment pushers, We wont even get in to all the models who now feel the need to be pop stars.
Taking an established 'face' and coupling it with a product is a simple solution for image change. If Brooks Brothers has an ad campaign using Lil Wayne, well they just scored a whole new demographic. But if Walmart was being promoted by Aretha Franklin, I would be terrified.
H&M is a inexpensive generic bland clothing rack with nothing unique and nothing of true quality. This makes Del Rey the perfect spokesperson as they share those same characteristics. Disposable and with a short shelf life.
