This Rod Serlings inspired video has a boatload of nothing going on but if you are over the age of 30 a few things are going to smack you in the head. Lets start with Rod Serling, he is the man behind The Twilight Zone series. Google him, I will wait. This video takes on that vibe brilliantly, in the beginning. Then something goes horribly wrong. That wasn't good enough. We had amp up the hip factor by turning it in to a giant instagram video. Like a million others. As the video gains color the lines blur and we are smack dab in the center of hipster village and Joy Formidable is the mayor.
Next lets talk about the vocals, shall we? They call this genre "dream pop-indie-alternative-fuzz rock", I call it 'lets rip off Siouxie and The Banshees and hope no one notices'. Vocally right down to production the Welsh poptart Ritzy Bryan totally ditches any sort of creativity or truth in character and instead opts to channel Sioux. Cant blamer her really but I don't think it wise to try without a tweak of modification. Must we be so obvious?
I don't even hate this. I like it I'm just sad that we have come to a place where we actually have to make up dumbass labels "dream pop-indie-alternative-fuzz rock" when all we need to say is.. They ripped off 1981. That's not dishonorable its actually cute. By calling it some whacked out genre you dilute the purity of the tribute and make it appear to be a rip off. Lets find our own voices shall we, or perhaps just be a cover band. Oh and the opening strain sounds like Kanye's "Runaway".
