I should preface this with a reminder that women in music have to try twice as hard to impress me. I can name those I respect on 1 hand. The rest fall short, too slutty, too stupid, too fake to whatever. I simply think music especially rock and roll is a mans job.
That being said its time to review the Australian sister act The Veronicas new video for the song "Lolita" I saw the band a few years back with MTVU's tour and I really really liked them Bubblegum girls that had that mysterious X factor that made me not hate them- when all suggested they be on my slam down list. Sisters? Bold makeup smirks? What are they? Heart?
No actually they're just a couple voices that work really well together. They haven't done squat since 2009 and I just figured they married and had kids and are raising sheep or something, but no. They just released this aliens vs hotties video and the song is..great?
Yeah, its hard for me to admit but I have to say I still really like these two. Even their rather poor acting in this silly video is more endearing than annoying. They're not exactly glam rock but they're beautiful and carry themselves well. They're not straddling a mic stand, they're doing their job and looking fabulous at the same time- sorta like me.
Musically the song is great dance stuff that I think may just make it on a few school dance playlists. Lyrically "Lolita' is rather mundane and how its tied in to the video is brow furrowing, theres really no tie in to being a seducer of older men and killing aliens but no worries its all in good fun. Even the 'sexy' scenes are sorta funny, head thrashing wet hair? Ok that's better than air humping a motorcycle.
The Veronica's are a yes in my book. Not good enough for me to love or admire but a pleasant way to spend 4 minutes.
