The premiere of the Screaming Females zombie video was pushed by RollingStone.com. RS certainly didn't deserve exclusivity for this video- its target market is a bunch of has beens but hey they got it- I watched and this is what I thought.
I'm all for that "Hey I'm Robert Smith no wait I'm Siouxie", teased hair Goth thing. It reminds me of my youth, I sported that look in 1983, good to see ya back. The poorly acted head nods as dialogue were rather laughable. Ok, I take it back, it was hilariously campy. Was it meant to be? I have to think this low budget grainy undead presentation has to be a giant joke since the editing is well… high school AV club.
I believe it was meant to be quirky and silly. I mean as green faced Marissa comes to life, I cant help but wonder..why the hell is she green and her hands white? Basically this is Scooby Doo meets the Gothtiques. Jarrett Dougherty and King Mike are the worse silent actors of all time. Whats supposed to be campy becomes just lame and unenthused. As if I am being forced to watch an inside joke.
None of this would bother me so much if the song was more appealing. The problem with this is vocally its the the Lollipop Kids from the Wizard of Oz and I simply cannot shake that from my association. Unintelligible garble. Not enough to be annoying just irking enough to sound like another language at times- like Alien or something.
Yes, yes I am aware of their rising stardom and I am aware that they have a very promising future. I am simply stating that this video is not going to thrust the band into arena's but it will very much tickle the fancy of their fans who will spread the world on these New Jersey heroes. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go find a reversal spell, this one needs to go back to sleep.
