Some artists have an opinion about every thing and they have no problem to share it with the world. NME, via Digital Spy, is reporting that The Vaccines’ guitarist Freddie Cowan said Rihanna wasn’t really what he could call an artist:
‘Rihanna isn't an artist – she has 15 writers, 15 songwriters and 15 producers all fighting for space on her albums and she's the face of it. I have nothing against it, but I don't want to be associated with it.’
What does he mean exactly by ‘associated with it’? Is Rihanna asking him to write a song for her? I certainly would agree with this, but how many Rihanna are out there? Tons, so why pick on her?
And he didn’t stop there and went to criticize Coldplay for collaborating with the pop princess for a song:
‘I've never heard that song, but it's Coldplay – they'll do whatever they can to be the biggest band on earth, to be bigger than U2’
‘They do it really well and they've never put out a bad album so hats off to them. I have nothing against those collaborations because I don't feel you can judge people, but I don't think I'll ever be involved in something like that. It needs artistic merit.’
Is there some sort of jealousy involved in all this? I like how he is saying he doesn’t feel he can judge people,… First he is dissing Coldplay for singing with Rihanna and wanting to be bigger than U2, then he declares that this kind of collaboration has no artistic merit, but yeah he is totally not judging them! And the Vaccines have certainly no ambition at all.
In the same interview he even declared that ‘Chris Brown shouldn’t even be allowed on the radio’! As much as I dislike the guy, would Cowan promote some kind of censorship? In this case, he is totally wrong of course.
