Would you pay that much for some old footage of a rock legend? Supposedly 'one of a kind' and never duplicated. We have to put blind faith in that one, seems a tough one to prove. Supposedly, these original tapes will have no 'crackle' as original filmings.
Chas Chandler, Hendrix's manager for several years was apparently squireling these tapes in his closet or something for the past 40 years and now has sold them on eBay for $10,000.00.
Three reels contain close-ups and clips from three different show during 1969 and 1970. The fourth reel contains unreleased footage from Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. The seller said in the description the fourth reel was Chandler's prize possession because it was Hendrix's 'first appearance in a major film.'
So what will be done with the footage now? Will it sit in cold storage for more decades or will they be snipped everywhere as a new money making venture? My thought is the later. Its far too easy to duplicate video and resell it while leaving the original museum worthy. The timing is amazing too, considering the Hendrix biopic is on the works.
The Jimi Hendrix biopic should flop pretty bad. Last reports indicate there will be no Hendrix music in the score. I am not sure how they can pull that off- but it would seem wise to negotiate something with the estate or not bother.
