Listen Up: 8-1-12

1. Keys To The City – Spider Bags – At first it sounds like the garage band of your dreams but once you've listened to it a couple of times, you will realize it is the punk rock band of your dreams. An amphetamine rush of power chords and infidlity – Grade: A+

2. Morningside – Neil Diamond – I've been spinning Hot August Night (spinning -hahaha) remastered for its 40th birthday. Suddenly, I'm 13 years old again… Grade: A

3. Flicker And Fade – Laura Marling – An outtake from her great last album, as great as anything on the album only more Joni Mitchel-y than usual  – Grade: A

4.There Ain't No Man Worth the Salt Of My Tears – Diana Krall – No, her singing can't match Peggy Lee's, so Diana doesn't try , and just plays a sassy jazz blues with a good brea in the middle (for dancing!) – Grade: B+

5. This Is PiL – PiL – No other, and the grunted echo shrieks are exactly what Lydon does best. But he did it better in 1979 – Grade: B

6. Knock On Wood – David Bowie – Bowie Live tends to get itself shelved as a mistaken attempt to prove he has soul. But, in fact, it is a Pinnochio story, the Thin White Duke goes in search of a heart to make himself fully human but finds a soul instead – Grade: A+

7. November Sun – Susanna Hoffs – This synthesis all her strengths, melody, 60s folk, beauty, and a great voice, and her great weakness, the songs still aren't very good – Grade: B

8. Oh Carol – Chuck Berry – Climb into my machine so we can cruise on out… Grade A+

9. No Love Lost – Wiley – Why was Dizzie in the Olympics, Wiley not so much? Grade: A

10. Westway – Blur – Actually, I haven't heard it yet
