The folk sisters-duo First Aid Kit was opening for Wild Flag in April, and I remember that their pure vocal harmonies and retro tunes made the unanimity among the crowd that night. They make their influences as clear as Gram Parsons was American and they are Sweedish, and they have now released a video for ‘Blue’, the third single of their 2011 album ‘The Lion’s Roar’.
The music is upbeat-nostalgic with simple but heartbreaking lyrics like ‘And the only man you ever loved/You thought was gonna marry you/Died in a car accident when he was only 22/Then you just decided, love wasn't for you’, and for their mini movie, the sisters got the great actress Ewa Fröling who played in Ingmar Bergman’s ‘Fanny and Alexander’. But let’s hear what they had to say to Spinner, about the video:
‘We wanted to try something totally different with 'Blue,' so this is our first story-based video. We filmed it at a big old mansion in the Swedish countryside. It's about an older woman who's living this decadent life in solitude in her mansion. She is bitter and unable to move on, clinging to her glamorous past. We portray ghosts of her past, memories of her glory days. The woman is played by the Swedish actress Ewa Fröling, to most known by her role in Ingmar Bergman's film ‘Fanny and Alexander’. We are so happy she wanted to act in our video and she was perfect. Shooting it was an amazing experience, as the director Daniel Wirtberg and his crew put a lot of effort and detail into their work. We love how it turned out: beautiful, sad and funny all at the same time.’
I know that the girls have made it big, since they are headlining the Henry Fonda Theater in October here in Los Angeles, but you can check out all their tour dates here.
