I Fight Dragons Warped Tour Hartford CT July 22, 2012

The greatest thing about Warped Tour is chances are good you’re going to stumble upon a  band you have never heard of.  Discovering new music is easier or harder depending on who you talk to.  Back in ‘the day’ you had radio that fed you new sounds and new ideas.  That’s gone now.You had underground clubs and college radio those are gone. Now we have internet radio but do we use it to its potential and how exactly can you get on it anyway?  Social media is the way to get your name out there, ‘like’ on Facebook , ‘follow’ on Twitter- or get your ass out to a show and discover the openers for a whole new bag of sound.

Sundays Hartford stop of Warped Tour 2012 served up a brilliant sound that I would never have given a shot to had I not been passively listening.  They followed Mod Sun, who ushered out his ‘friend base’ and proceeded T Mills. And there sandwiched between two THC saturated performers were a rock and roll band from Chicago Illinois.

Heavy handed on the technology I Fight Dragons got dubbed 'ninetendocore' on their Wikipedia.  Who's the cheeseball that did that.  Granted they use gameboy controllers as instruments and yeah their work has been used by video games but can we pause a bit here to really appreciate them as musicians?  Legit musicians.

This is where I think Warped planning made an error.  Stuck between the weedfluence, they didnt get the right crowd over to IFD.  They're rockers with a gimmick but this nerdcore has fantastic potential and therefore I dub them 'Warped Discovery of The Year'.  What a great band with a self depreciating air to them.

This is every guys band, no flashy ego, no cock rock just a bunch of AV nerds who I bet did a whole lot of air guitar in their parents basement.  Playing songs off their 2011 release "Geeks Shall Inherit the World", the band had a small but interested crowd before them. I am hoping they swing by on their own in the near future- I want to see them in a different setting.  I am that intrigued.

It's as if they're rough Weezer in their image.  Just regular guys with quirky lyrics and straightforward stage presence and some of the most hilarious videos I have ever seen.  They must tour CT again and soon.

The live version of "Kaboom" at first reminded me of "My Sharona" they definitely have a retro feel and when I ventured in to their youtube I was blown away to see that Gumby and Pokey performed this song. Fucking adorable.  Here is their video sure enough to make you smile on a Wednesday.

Great band, great great band.
