Easy To Be Hard – Three Dog Night
Eli’s Coming – Three Dog Night-Both these can be lumped together. These guys were almost as big a hit machine as Creedence. Discovered by Brian Wilson who wanted to sign them to Brother Records, and give them ”Time To Get Alone” as their first single. Once the other Beach Boys found out about it, they told Brian in no uncertain terms that his song would not be given away and his new druggie friends could take a hike.
Everybody Is A Star – Sly & The Family Stone- The B side to Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again)” which should show up later on. This is a laid back groove with some lead vox traded off amongst the family. Rose Stone in particular, shines here.
Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky – Lee Dorsey-Sounds like “Workin’ in The Coal Mine. Pass
Evil – The Edgar Broughton Band-This is pretty heavy, almost a prog/metal thing, but it seems influenced by Arthur Lee or maybe The Fugs. The first single ever released on the Harvest Label.
Evil Ways – Santana -Big hit, went to #9 in December. Hot off the heels of their Woodstock performance earlier that summer.
Feelin’ Alright – Joe Cocker-Cover of the Dave Mason tune. This was covered by lots of artists including Grand Funk, Three Dog, Rare Earth, and Jackson 5. This version has Carol Kaye on bass.
Fireball Of Love – Shocking Blue-Mariska Veres sings lead here. They would score a world wide hit with “Venus” the following year. On this track it’s clear that the band is very together and all they needed was a good song. Of course, that’s easy to say now.
First Of May – Bee Gees- This is beautiful. From the “Odessa” album.
Forget All About It – Nazz- Doing the math, the first time I heard this song was when I was seven years old! On lead guitar and production is soon to be wizard/true star Todd Rundgren. It’s pretty clear that this guy was not going to be denied. Every square inch of this song is packed with tuneful complexity-Listen for a glockenspiel of all things at the beginning and the end.
Fortunate Son – Creedence Clearwater Revival – These are just folk songs in major keys, but delivered with such conviction and attitude it’s undeniable.
Free As A Bird – The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band-Curious little recording. It has a certain handmade charm.
Friendship Train – Gladys Knight & The Pips-We’re puttin the funk boots back on because its getting’ all hot and greasy in here again.
Galveston – Glen Campbell-The definitive version of the classic Jimmy Webb tune. One of the biggest hits that year and more than deservedly so.
Get Back – The Beatles–Sweet Loretta Faat, she thought she was a cleaner, yeah, we know.
