To quote Woody Allen, I love this city, I don't care what anybody says. Want a good reason? The modern folk rocking Cate Le Bon hit nyc in support of her sophomore. not to mention breakthrough, album Cyrk, in February of this year and I completely missed it. And if I was living in Lubbock Texas, then that's it. On your bike for another year.
So imagine my complete delight in discovering Cate will be back at Mercury on September 21st! A Friday!!.
I've been listening to the album on and off for months, she has a strong but not very wide voice, sorta soprano to falsetto, and writes obtruse Kate Bush variants, but with a penchant for Goth like thanatology and Welsh weird black magicness and none of gets out of the soul. I don't want to make Cyrk sound too fairie-ish. It ain't "oh what fools these mortals be" though mortality is signature. This can rock hard and is consistent dark with light and space being bled in thru melody.
On stage, she reminds me a little of Florence Welch without the Stevie Nicks affectations, there is a deep unsettling brrrness to it all and, also, Cyrk II will be released and I'm kinda bumming over that because it means I missed the second album proper tour. Still at $14.50 including TM charges, I am not complaining that much.
An absolute must see…. I mean get a tix now.
