We have to admit it we like it when musicians give their opinions about other entertainers, especially when the opinion is a strong one. According to NME, which got it from Bang Showbiz, Gossip frontgirl Beth Ditto had this to say about Lady Gaga:
‘I think her music is for five-year-olds. Like when I was five, for me it was Madonna, Cyndi Lauper and Michael Jackson. Those people were iconic.’
It is a weird thing to say, it could be taken the bad way, this-is-child-music, but at the same time she is placing Gaga is in good company!
She continued with the following:
‘I'm 31, so that was like 26 years ago. I think that for the five-year-old watching MTV right now, Lady Gaga is going to be an iconic person. In 20 years, the people who are here and talking to journalists will be like, 'Oh Lady Gaga changed my life, Nicki Minaj changed my life.' They'll be saying who influenced them and it will be Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, artists like that. I don't think it's as relevant when a 31-year-old is saying the same things.’
‘I think that what she does is interesting, and you know it's contributing in a really big way. But if you're watching Lady Gaga as a kid, it's so much different [as opposed to] when you're 31. It's like yeah we like her songs but because we're experiencing them as 31-year-olds it doesn't have the same impact. The five year olds listening to Lady Gaga are ripping their hair out because they've never seen or heard anything like it.’
So the first out-of-context sentence can be slightly misleading, but yeah, she is definitively saying this is not grown-up music, that Gaga has a much stronger impact on kids than adults. And I would not disagree with her, all these crazy flamboyant outfits, and easy-to-catch rhythms have definitively an appeal for kids whatever you are talking about the Born This Way star or Nicki Minaj. Curiously, this is not destined to amuse children, because of the sexual content of most of their videos and lyrics… of course little kids like that too, so does Beth Ditto mean that people who like these artists are like perverse little 5-year-olds?
Anyway, this is coming from someone who has never worn outfits matching the extravagance of Lady-Gaga's!
