Must See Concert: Micky Dolenz, October 2012

Or as Helen Bach labeled it the "Catch 'Em Before They Croak Tour". A touch snarky, true. But hand it to Micky Dolenz (who is somewhat older than he appears here), it takes a brave man to follow in these particular Davy Jones footsteps. Davy didn't last pass two weeks after his BB King gig earlier this year.

Having noted that, Micky is also tempting the fates by dubbing himself "The Monkees' Kead Singer". Which is not the same as claiming he is the Monkee that sang lead on mayby a third of all Monkees songs. No less an insider than Mike Nesmith claimed the other three performers were essentially Davy's sidemen. I guess Dolenz disagrees.

One final note of contention, when I saw him last year with the rest of the band, his voice was in pretty bad shape.

No, wait, wait: one other thing, I met him once in the 1990s and he was a total dick.

But I am going anyway, because, it is still the drummer of the Monkees and a legend. Micky always will have sung lead on "Last Train to Clarksville" .

Also, Micky takes his legacy more seriously than Davy held his. He has a better memory for his days in the Monkees. He embraces what he accomplished without the clowing Davy brought to it. At the reunion concert, the Monkees didn't need Micky's hard sell I Am legend. Solo, it might be very much a lesson in popular music.
