Best Coast New song 'Why I Cry' at SXSW

Best Coast is about to release a new album, but you will have to wait till May 15th to listen to this Jon Brion production called ‘The Only Place’.

Actually, not totally, the band recently debuted one new song during their set at the 35 Denton Music Festival in Downtown Denton TX.

The song entitled ‘Why I Cry’, is very much in the same vein as what we have heard before, a sunny melody, some fast rhythms, Bethany Consentino’s bright vocals with lots of stretched syllables and repetitive lyrics,… how many times does she say ‘you don’t know why I cry’ anyway?

It is relatively catchy but where is the departure she has announced on Pitchfork last January? This is an excerpt of what she said:

‘We didn't want to make a "lo-fi" record, we wanted to make something that was produced, and sounded different than our first record without completely changing who we are.’

So far I don’t hear the difference.

She also said she completely re-wrote this song, following Jon Brion’s advice:

Anyways, I took Jon's advice and completely re-wrote the melody and lyrics. It's called ‘Why I Cry’ and it ended up being one of my favorite songs on the record. It has that thing I love– happy melody, sad lyrics. Seriously, this record is emo– get ready for it.’

Is this really emo?
