i am so sorry to hear that not two weeks after I saw him at BB King's, Davy Jones of the Monkees died today of a heart attack at his home in Florida.
At 10 years old, Davy was appearing on the long running English soap "Coronation Street", and by 15 was starring as the Artful Dodger in the Broadway production of "Oliver!." Five years later he was the uber-teen throb of all time as the one that got the girl in the TV sitcom the Monkees.
The show I caught the other week was disappointing enough for me to wonder why Davy didn't take his past more seriously. I mean, he must have realized how great he was and whenever he did sing he was terrific. So why he chose to give the performance he did i don't know.
Certainly, nobody thinks what Jones did with the Monkees was in any sense easy. He took world adulation in his stride, and as I recently mentioned,, spent much of his time in the Monkees, seeking out ill children who wanted to meet him.
Davy also had three daughters and countless Grandchildren who were mightily impressed by his guest starring role on Spongbob Squarepants.
Jones was, as I wrote at the time, the best thing about the Monkees reunion in 2011.
A legendary nice guy, decent human being who no scandal has touched, international heartthrob, terrific singer, and self-deprecating good guy, rock nyc offers its condolences to his children and grandchildren. Davy Jones was always too busy singing to put anybody down.
