Jesus has a great sense of humor. As a practicing Christian I can say with some manner of certainty that looking at most of the people on Earth is proof of this. In his image God created a huge amount of idiots, one of them is Tim McGraw.
There is a weird sense of obligation the hicks of the Earth have to simplify things for the smaller less functioning brain.
The song is a story of triumph all attributed to the glory of Jesus. As if Jesus himself is responsible for all good that comes to the common man.
'Touchdown Jesus" is a redneck 'high five bro-ski'
The truth of the matter is Tim McGraw is an annoying man with a big hat. He marketed this little ditty to his Bible belt brethren in hopes of making cool the word of God and maybe a smidgen of evangelical want.
It sucks.
To be a truly evangelical song it must make you feel power. Jesus doesn't want a slap on the ass in the locker room though he may want to slap McGraw in the head for being such a jerk.
Then we have the more subtle perhaps a more thinking mans 'high five Jesus' That being Craig Finn's "Honolulu Blues".
Where McGraw takes the easy hammock philosophy of passive religion Finn makes you pause to reflect. Finn says we're human and that there is greater than us.
In the song "Honolulu Blues", Craig Finn isn't passive at all. On a journey of soul searching he stops and starts gets lost and gets found and lost again, all the while never really claims to believe or not. He is actively moving in the direction of life and upon the journey, using bits and pieces of faith to follow through.
Finn makes you think. McGraw just says 'atta-boy'. Who's right? Neither. They're two songs from two men. One who wants everyone to like him and one who doesn't give a fuck cuz he's not even sure he likes himself.
