Tweet Me Nice: Cancer Killing Gemini

There was a day in the not too distant past when you would discover 'myspace bands'.

Remember that phrase?

EVERY band had a myspace, go there now and it looks like an abandoned prison.  Creepy, dark and full of freaky hanger on'rs.

So now we have Facebook, of course.  All bands have a FB we 'like' them and they feed us songs.  Enough of that, I have decided to discover new band via Twitter.

I can 'follow' them and well we would never have found the amazing Suicide Dolls if there wasn't one night when we just happen to be tweeting insults at the Grammys.  I loved them from that moment and from their biting sense of humour discovered a great band.

As a semi regular column I will take a look at a band who has decided to 'follow' me.  How they find me is a mystery.  I don't really promote my facebook or my twitter.  I'm horrible at keeping it updated but alas, it doesn't seem to matter.  I get bands and I get some great ones- in a vast sea of new music its tough to keep up.  So I'm gonna help you discover some new stuff without hunting it down.

First up, Cancer Killing Gemini a band from Boston MA.  These kids have an interesting concept, no big album plans instead they will release a song a month…forever.  Forever is a long time.  A song a month is a guarantee that they have had plenty of time to serve up something of value.  No rushy rushy to get 12 on a platter, these guys have 30 days minimum to get it right.

Do they?

The do!  A spooky fucked up confusing sound that makes your brow furrow.  You want to just complacently listen but thats not allowed. Vocalist Eric Cohen has enough range to not be just a 'rock singer', he's much more and much more complex.  The instrumentalists who accompany him are just as diverse. The production is of great quality for an 'unsigned'.  Proof that there is intelligence in their work.  Well planned well executed and a nice hook.

You can whip your hair around to their sound if you'd like, there is room to do that.  I gotta say I adore the bass in each song I heard.  So high five to Andrew Padua.

Cancer Killing Gemini is an arty Boston band who gives us some hope that you don't have to be an indie hipster bastard.  You can actually be indie and cool.  Hell with songs with titles like "Vaseline For The Vomit Queen", "The Taxidermy Song" and "Should I Tell You That Your Pretty" it's as if I named them.

Lets take a moment to say I loved the video for "Should I…".  Actually all of  their videos are really well done.  Again, proving that a band can do a hell of allot of wonderful stuff without being backed by 'the man'  I realize its over a year old but again.. it's new to me so that's all that matters.

They're way cool.

Their website?  Pissed me off too no end. BUT it was worth the aggravation to hear what was there.

Do the same and support them
