Some things are sacred and some things are not. "Mr Blue Sky", is a fantastic upbeat song that was covered beautifully by Lily Allen. Artist Holmes gives it a go Cappella.
Well then…
I started out hating it. Felt a little Straight No Chaser lame. I wont lie, I found it more annoying than pleasurable. As I allowed the song to evolve I realized that it was actually quite good . It didn't blow me away, but it was interesting and pleasant background sound.
This song is off an album titled "Covers". This is where things get different. In a nearly speak sing tone Holmes takes on a really odd group of pop songs and tweaks them just enough to not sound like a lounge karaoke. The song "Tenderness" originally done by General Public is stellar, if you an overlook the back up singer…mute that.
The tanker is "Bicycle", just skip that it doesn't work at all. "You Dropped A Bomb On Me", saves the day. What the hell is this about! The Gap bands funk fest turns in to a plucky easy listening tune. Its really rather humorous.
I cant figure out if Holmes intends to be funny or just quirky. Either way, if you are a fan of cover songs "Covers" may disappoint. By tweaking the melody and speed, they lose their original momentum.
If you are a fan of clear lyric singing- Holmes is your man, This is most definitely a calm and docile work, maybe just a bit too calm for me.
