This is not the monster mashup the Beatles Love was. But t MJ's soundtrack to the Circque de Soliel live show, isn't half as bad as his other post-humous album, either. It toggles been songs and segues within a track, sometimes so overdone you wanna upchuck ("Childhood" was lousy on HIStory too), sometimes so clear and clean your ears tingle with pleasure ("Wanna Be Starting Something") and sometimes so weird ("The Mime Segment") it could only make sense in context.
But really, with songs of this quality, how wrong can it go?
Not very, but it needed a better producer to meld it together, too often it uses sound effects to move from one set piece to another where what was needed was musical bridges and this is disconcerting at the least. What I wanted was an hour long, first rate remixed, MJ album: a breathless gallop thriough his catalog.
But the album is hiccup-ey, herky-jerky, it lacks flow, And it is disappointing but not disastrously so.
Grade: B+
