I stumbled on this recently, and could not stop scratching my head over it. This is what Black Eyed Peas’ Will.i.am told Rolling Stone about a year ago:
‘Every time music was put out on circles, it was successful. When records came out, you had 45s, then 33s, then 12-inches – all multiples of three, all circles. As soon as tape decks tame out and there were 8-tracks – square. Didn't work. A cassette is a rectangle –
didn't work. CD came out – through the roof. The iPods and laptops put music on rectangles – doesn't work, can't monetize it. You have to figure out how to make art work in squares.’
I don’t know what he is talking about, does he mean that if iPods and laptops were round, the music industry will not have its current problems? I see, he is the kind of guy who has all figured it out, and it is very simple: squares and circles!
And is he also implying there is some magical combination 45, 33, 12, multiples of 3? As if there was some kind of pseudo-science behind this, some BS numerology. It’s borderline esoteric and voodoo!
Like Herman Cain repeating ‘nine, nine, nine’ as a solution to the economical crisis, Will.i.am reminds me these people who always have ridiculous solution for complex problems they don’t even comprehend. The music industry is facing its biggest crisis and will have to reinvent itself, but it will certainly not with circles!
How can such stupidities be published?
