Soundtrack, ‘This Must Be the Place’, by the Pieces of Shit

In the upcoming Sorrentino’s ‘This Must Be the Place’, Sean Penn plays Cheyenne, a former rock star, who seems to have borrowed a lot from Robert Smith according to that picture! The film, which premiered at the Cannes festival early this year, tells the story of the retired and bored rocker, who embarks on a soul-searching journey through America to find the Nazi war criminal, who was his estranged father’s persecutor in Auschwitz.

And if you find the scenario kind of wacky, wait until you have listened to the soundtrack by… The Pieces of Shit! A new band? Rather the unexpected collaboration between David Byrne and Will Oldham aka Bonnie 'Prince' Bill. They wrote five original songs for the movie, Oldham wrote the lyrics and Byrne the music, whereas Irish singer songwriter Michael Brunnock did the singing.

I could not say I was really interested by the two songs I listened to ‘Open Up’ and ‘Eliza’, but it’s always great to hear Iggy Pop’s ‘The Passenger’, or the Talking Heads’ ‘This Must Be the Place (Naïve Melody)’, which appropriately also figure in the soundtrack, and even Bonnie Prince Billy’s ‘Lay & Love’, one of the 6 songs performed under the fabulous moniker, The Pieces of Shit.
