This was expected, but so fast? Side-Line music magazine reports that the major labels plan to abandon the CD-format by the end of 2012 or even earlier.
No more CDs! Only download and stream on the internet, and some occasional limited edition CDs mostly distributed by Amazon.
Nevertheless, the article says ‘we have tried getting some feedback from EMI, Universal and Sony. All declined to comment.’ So is it for real? Not sure, some people are skeptical, and the news is not picked up by other major websites, However, sooner or later the CDs will be completely gone.
Ecologically speaking, it makes a lot of sense, the less we manufacture, the better for the environment, the CDs will disappear, just like the books and the newspapers. But there will always be some nostalgic people, who are attached to the format, format is just so important for some persons… just look at what is happening to vinyl! I suppose lots of stores will continue to sell used CDs for quite some time, but I just wonder what the ‘old’ generation. not used to digital downloads, will do.
