There seems to be a misapprehension as to what is behind Spotify and, indeed, streaming as a whole.
Some facts to go with your Coldplay.
1. 70% of all mp3 downloads are illegal -Spotify kills it.
2. The Generation born this century does not pay for music. They make playlists on Itunes for free. Spotify offers an alternative.
3. The vast majority of the world spends less than $20 a year on music. Spotify is too expensive for them. They'll turn to Itunes.
4. Spotify is a multi-social networking platform that works as a serious promotional tool for bands and moves ticket sales , tees, etc and expands their fanbase.
5. Not only are Coldplay an exception, they are also a dinosaur. It won't happen again.
6. Lil Wayne sold almost a million copies of his last album and he was on Spotify. So was the new Kanye and Jay-Z (a couple of days after release).
7. The major studios nearly destroyed the music industry by fighting file sharing instead of selling it before people got used to napster. Steve Jobs saved em. This time, Spotify gave em a cut and the majors got on board.
8. Everytime Alyson or Layna mention a band I don't know and I can go on Spotify and listen to their entire catalog, Spotify are doing the band a favor by breaking them to another potential concert goer.
9. If this means rock stars make less money and can't afford mansions or telling their employees not to look them in their eyes, so be it.
If anything, Spotify is too expensive. But maybe, if they get lucky, they can fend off Youtube and be at the vanguard for a new world of music distribution.
