2008's Cardinolgy was my second favorite album of that year and "Crossed Out Name" one of the most quietly powerful song Ryan Adam's has ever written.
The Cardinals, his band of the time, had just come off a number of excellent albums, Easy Tiger for one. And then we waited and waited and Tuesday we got Adams solo new one and… man is it slow.
Everything here is slow as molasses and the melodies are so muted you seem to be spending your summer vacations waiting for them to kick in hard. Admittedly, this is a first impression but as first impressions go, it is a draggy, tired one. Is he really so happy? Than why does his joy in marital bliss only make me wanna so sleepy.
Let's hope first impressions are wrong but still, this will need more time to kick in that's for sure.
