You don't know what loath is until you've tried to pitch yourself against big time music websites with just about zero resources, zero dollars, zero connects, and nothing but a handful of brains, some PR folks, and a bunch of friends writing with you, and then come against the Pitchforks and the Stones and the Spins, each have their good points (I guess -sometimes Pitchfork is funny), but each of which irritate the fuck out of me.
Pitchfork's news isn't (and with their resources it should be) and their reviews are such long winded bores, it is that everything they love about music (or writing) is the opposite of the way I feel. They are so long winded and pompous and clever clogs and though they at least get hip hop (though they suck at dance and they suck at pop so bad they don't bother with it), they over think it. But I can forgive bad opinion, it is bad writing I can't stomach. Everything is so fucking overwritten, over thought out, overwhelming. Remember the reviews of the last Vampire Weekend album, Contra? I think VW were playing their little joke on the world of rock criticism. I mean really, " 8-bit interpolation of Toots and the Maytals' "Pressure Drop"??
Rolling Stone are worse. Rolling Stone is a corrupt institution and Wenner uses his record review pages to pay back favors. The writing can be perky from time to time but they are singularly clueless on hip hop, a little better on dance and OK on pop. Still, they never get it right with musicians before they break big. From "The Fame" to "The End" -they gave em 2 1/2 , maybe 3 stars. The next album: boom, up to 4 stars. I was doing rock nyc when The End came out, and I raved and raved and raved, which makes me the only person who did until the fucking album hit. Like the man said, you can look it up.
Spin sucks so bad they aren't worth insulting.
Which is the long way for me to not apologize for stealing Pitchfork's round up of Autumn releases. All property is theft, motherfuckers.
