Not seen as a front man (minus Pete Wentz) or even as popular as a guitarist, bass players usually get thrown aside. Few understand what it truly takes to be the base(bass) of the band. Not only the one who keeps the songs flowing, but they also create a smooth surface for the guitars and vocals to do their thing and paint a song.
Creativity, talent, stamina, strong fingers, RHYTHM, and the ability to think on your feet are all talents the bassist must have.
Creativity because you must think of catchy riffs or, if you’re just given a few notes throughout a song, the ability to improvise, which calls for talent.
Rhythm because the drums and the bass go together, without one, there is no band.
Stamina and strong fingers go together because of the thick strings and being able to keep that heavy bass on your shoulder while focusing on the song, rhythm, notes, and your finger rotation.
Thinking on your feet may be one of the most important traits a bassist must possess. If at any point something goes wrong, like a string snapping, you must know where else you can find the right note to play.
Undoubtedly, a bass player must be ready for anything.
So next time you listen to a song, turn the bass up. Don’t brush them aside. Without the bassist, your favorite band wouldn’t exist.
