She didn’t make a post, neither did No Doubt but I am less crazy about them, she DIDN’T MAKE MY BEST OF THE DECADE list and this despite Love. Angel. Music. Baby. being one of the best albums of 2004. Call the album after one of the songs “Bubble Pop Electric” -synth pop plus samples.
And with hits galore: “Hollaback Girl” made an ebonics term ubiquiuous, “Rich Girl” gave “If I Was A Richman” a new life, and “Harajuku Girls” made geishas hot again.
At MSG with my ex (yes, that ex, which is probably why I keep mindblocking on Gwen), we snuck all the way down to the first row by the side of the stage and was so close we coulda touched her. Julie was first giggling and then laughing, and Gwen was spectacular. We saw Madonna around the same time and Gwen was much better.
The follow up solo The Sweet Escape was more of the less of the same but not terrible and two children and a reunion with No Doubt later, Gwen can look back a decade well done.
And I ignored her!!!
I’ll get around to putting her Love.Angel on best of list at some point, till then: don’t drink the bathwater…
I have no explanation and no excuse for failing to mention Gwen Stefani on Rock NYC and not even once.
