Escape from Space by Mary Magpie

The Space, a super fun venue in Hamden CT, that reminds me of my basement. Pulling up in the pouring rain with my mom and Ron on Sunday december 13th, I couldn’t wait to see what was in store for us. The first two bands,(the first one we missed the majority of due to a weird argument between Helen and a GPS screen), weren’t anything special. They didn’t really leave much of an impression considering I can’t remember their names. Not a big loss considering the crowd wasn’t into them either.

Love Via Dance Machine was third, and GOODNESS they are talented. Not only fun and energetic, but just plain positive. A fan of a few songs, I couldn’t help but think just how big these guys are gonna get. I hope that with their talent, they get the recognition they DESERVE. It’s hard to find a band this unique these days, but LVDM are in a category of their own. Up on stage doing their thing, I just couldn’t get the smile off my face as they were pumping out their one-of-a-kind sound.

Signal the Escape was up next and I immediately fell in love. Excited and happy to be there, it seemed all they cared about was having a good time. Their vibe spread throughout the crowd and it caused a chain reaction. I moved along to the beat having a blast and loving them. Found a new favorite band of mine that night, and a new recording to put on my Christmas list!

Sparks the Rescue was last but most certainly not least. Without a doubt they were full of energy despite non stop touring. As they were putting out rhythms and lyrics, I was standing right up against the stage taking it in. Not even realizing how loud it was, I just forgot about everything, completely stunned by the togetherness of this band. And to top it all off, I knew they were completely comfortable up there because they were joking around and laughing. We were all just hanging out in my basement, well or so it felt. To see a band play for such a small crowd and not be nervous or uncomfortable is huge. I truly realized that this band is wonderful live AND recorded.

Walking out of the venue, cameras full of me and bands and a free Signal The Escape shirt given to me by the lead singer Tom, my ears were ringing with the sounds of an incredible night.

Of course I followed up that great night with 3 days of bed rest, but it was worth it. Right?
