Tony Luca,Josh Hoge, Matt Lowell have Mary Magpie channelling her inner jason Mraz

The folks at Rock Ridge are developing a habit of bringing together three performers of varying fame and unstinting professionalism and sending them off off tour. Often these are session pros and producers ready to move into a starring role. Unfortunately, Rock NYC’s teenage rock crit Mary Magpie can’t get in to see them them at the 18 Plus only The Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, Mass on Saturday December 12th, 2010. So we gave Mary a deadline of now and sat in front of  her Ipod.

First up is LA’s Tony Lucca, five albums deep into a career that has found him working with the likes of NSYNC, Jason Mraz and Joss Stone. Mary wrote this: “Tony Lucca’s smooth voice is the first thing that came to my attention. It’s gentle as it takes you by the hand and drags you on the journey he wants to take you on. “Pretty Things” is Jason Mraz-esque with the catchy lyrics. I’ll admit, it’s not my genre but I love his voice. I have the feeling this song is going to end up on my iPod… “

Next Nashville cat Josh Hoge channeled his inner Hall and Oates; Mary wrote:”Not a wonderful singer, but still good. As for lyrics? “Space” is just another heartsick love song. There are thousands of them out there, but you have to stand out to make it.”

Finally, the winner of the 2008 Boston Awards and hard touring songwriter Matt Lowell. Mary wrote “I wouldn’t be able to tell Matt Lowell’s “Second Storm” from any other acoustic soloist. Undoubtedly talented, just not unique. Very gifted when it comes to guitar, with that coffee shop feel that you can’t help but love and a voice that brings me back to the days when I sang along to Maroon 5. I just wish that somehow, some way, he was distinctive. This is also going to end up on my iPod eventually.”
