Songs For When Things Can’t Be Fixed by Helen Bach

Elton John, sang a horrible song called “Sad Songs”. Really if you think about it what about music can bring you down or at least help you maintain that morose feeling? More so why would you want to?

Most ‘sad’ songs are about lost love ‘I’ll never fall in love again” songs. But songs of death and dying. Well there really aren’t many songs that say ……..my God why did you go die on me. See maybe there are Country songs that say that cuz that genre doesn’t give a crap they point blank say it like it is. Rock, pop, alt, dance.. not so much.

I googled songs for mourning. Came up with a boat load of Reba, Dwight and George Jones…not surprised there.

Me? I’m mourning tonight. I will every December 5th for the rest of my life. But hell no am I crankin Dwight Yokum.

I began the day with a healthy heap of Cat Stevens. Harold and Maude being a celebration of life in my eyes. Always. Those of you who have seen this film know the song “If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out”. To me the banjo playing Bud Cort makes me pause to realize that life is good. Sometime that’s hard to remember.

I filled the day with Christmas sounds not by choice but by events and caught myself welling up in the grocery store. Please Come Home For Christmas, is a plea that takes on new meaning if you’ve lost someone this time of year.

“Funeral for A Friend?” nah.. but that is a WAY cool tune. “Into the Mystic” Van Morrison, possible. The most overwhelming song, one I cant listen to years later is the song “Fix You”, by Coldplay. Whoa, there goes my ability to view the screen, funny how hot tears can feel. Interesting still, that even the thought of it makes me well up with tears

This song was on the radio as I floored it to the hospital that cold December day

When you try your best, but you don’t succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can’t sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can’t replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home,
And ignite your bones,
And I will try to fix you,

High up above or down below
When you’re too in love to let it go
But if you never try you’ll never know
Just what you’re worth

Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I

Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I

Liights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

I couldn’t fix her. I lost my mom and that song will always remind me of my inability to do anything about it.

And at her service in the middle of one of New England’s most brutal snow storms.. the organist couldn’t make it in. Faced with no music for my music loving mothers final gathering. I turned to my daughter, a musical genius suffering with her own overwhelming grief. But she looked me in the eyes and said I only know one song by heart.

She went to the piano in silence, sat down. Looked up. And played “Ode To Joy”.

Perfect.
