1. Bring It On Home To Me/Send Me Some Loving – John Lennon – An outtake and a weird one, the rhythm plods a little, and the great Lennon sounds nasally, and upset but not sexily. Compare to the warmth of his his vocals seven years later , everything you hear about Lennon's lost weekend is there for you to hear.
2. Gangsta – Tune-Yards – This woman is a genius but for some reason I don't listen to her very often: a world of sounds and a constant interruption, it is so angular, so syncopated, it sounds unlike anything you've heard. the question remains, does it function as a song song and the answer is, if it does (I need to listen to it more) it will be one of the better ones this year.
3. I Ain't Satisfied – Steve Earle And the Dukes – From the 1990 live album , a committed country rock triumph with the Dukes.
4. Born This Way – :Lady Gaga – Songs gain strength thru success , this come hither to the sexually ambiguous sure has.
5. Run This World (Girls) – Beyonce – Like David Byrne once said, the world moves on a woman's hips.
6. The Great Curve – Talking Heads – This is where he said and it, and this track off thirty odd age album, coulda been released yesterday. Since everybody steals these African triplets off em, it is a wonder the band isn't cited more often. Vampire Weekend for one can never repay their debt.
7. Missing – Eliza Doolittle – Sure, it's a classic melody but this is more than a cover version with different lyric, mostly because of a bravado Bridget Jone-sy vocal.
8. The Other Shoe – Fucked Up – Smart post punk dressed up as punk punk.
9. Where not To look For Freedom – The Belle Brigade – the album doesn't sustain it but this is a brilliant Rumors era Mac rip.
