On their soundcloud page their is a succint description of Mack Winston And The Reflections: “They are a rock and roll band from Los Angeles”.
On their myspace they the band claims their genre is “Tango / Techno / Zouk”
Actually, they look as though they’ve just stepped out of a new wave wave circa 1969 and sound like one of their influences, especially on the bluesy “The Manipulator”, Tom Petty, with all of the country and Southern accents bleed out replaced by an urbanity that ranges from L.A. to NYC to London.
Right through Mack Winston’s pretty terrific debut album, there is a classicist assurance in song. “The Dreamer” is a gorgeous ballad with piano frills plus organ.
The organ can kinda dominate things here, the songs seem built around it. That and Mack himself who has a protean voice, one moment a gruff rock voice, the next a sweet and tough emotionalism.
