Night terrors Of 1927

Remember Rilo Kiley? Probably, they had catchy songs, released five albums and then they vanished… Remember the Elected? Probably not since they never reached Rilo Kiley fame, but Blake Sennett was in both bands and he is now in Night Terrors of 1927. Oh I saw them two years ago at one of these Monday Residencies at the Echo and I reviewed the show. At the time, I got the impression they were aiming at a big sound, and at the risk to sound pompous I am going to quote a bit of the review I wrote – it was more than a year ago, so I can’t remember how they sounded: ‘Almost all their songs sounded like these fat rock anthems, too big to just live in the indie scene but built to conquer the arena-rock world.’… ‘They were aiming towards a big sound à la U2, the Killers or Passion Pit.’

Night Terrors of 1927 (Blake Sennett and ex-Honorary Title Jarrod Gorbel) have now released an album, ‘Everything Coming Up Roses’, and they even had a release party at the Roxy last Friday. I was at the FIDLAR show so couldn’t go, but from what I could listen to, their album could get some serious radio airplay soon, as they certainly went for the catchy synth-pop anthems filled of bombastic-climatic whoah-ohs blowing the roof. There is even a song featuring the famous duo Tegan and Sara, who are mixing their sweet female harmonies with Gorbel’s deep, almost operatic voice,… he certainly will remind you Brandon Flowers’ vocals… So will they get as famous as the Killers?

Well, I guess! as they have already appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers (with the help of Dum Dum Girls Dee Dee Penny), they are going to tour with Bleachers and of course they have made it to this year’s Coachella lineup. Not bad for a new band. This electro pop sound is quite different from Blake’s previous work with Rilo Kiley, but again if you are into the Killers and dance synth-pop… They named themselves after a sleep disorder that Blake’s girlfriend suffers from and I am just wondering whether the title of the album is a reference to an Elliott Smith’s song? Here is the video for ‘When You Were Mine’, featuring Tegan and Sara.
