New Music Week Of February 14th, 2011: Can Do What They did

Under Cover Of Darkness – The Strokes – I am a touch agnostic about this. I thought Julian’s solo album was a masterpiece and step forward (plus cmon “Ludlow Street”?) and this proves they can do what they did and it is pretty good. But it is almost like treading water. And it aint as good as “Once in A Lifetime”.

Sing – My Chemical Romance – The worst song MCR have ever written. It is one thing to write a song of uplift, pathetic but one thing. It is something else entirely to write one without a trace of melody. The album stiffed and deserved to stiff.

Shake It Up – Selena Gomez – Pretty good Britney inspired mover, and better than both Gaga and Queen Brit’s latst.

Rock N Roll – Raekwon – This is so dreary, so out of, so below the standard we expect from Wu Tang Clanner, I am just gonna ignore it.

On Battleship Hill – PJ Harvey – I love PJ and she has had a pretty OK 21st century so far, but I respectfully decline to rave about this extortionately average folk song with Kate Bush-y vocals. No, this desire is not enough.

I Confess – k.d. lang – The reason why my songs of the week sounds so negative is because by the time I’m ready to write it, I’ve already covered the songs I love so often I am sick of writing about them, which only leaves the dogs. TRACK OF THE WEEK

Hit The Wall – Lamb – I thought they blew Metallica way off stage last time I saw em. This is more of the same hardcore metal. Good riff but.

The Roller – Beady Eye – That freebie was better than this. Like Lennon getting mugged by the bay city rollers.

Architects – Rage Against – Again, OK for what it is, but geez haven’t we heard this often enough?

Ray’s Automatic Weekend – Drive By Truckers – This should be mother’s milk to me, but I can’t express how tedious I find their song structure. This is a not bad country rocker but no more than that.
