Sailor Jerry’s Rum And Life Outside The Lines

Outside the Lines

I have been to a few concerts sponsored by Sailor Jerry (Afghan Whigs, the Night Beats, Wooden Shjips) and they were all good! They were free with some extra spirit on the side, although I am not a drinker at all!  Sailor Jerry, the famous spiced rum brand, has released ‘Here’s to Life Outside the Lines’, a film celebrating punk spirit and rebellion, a series of road trip and bike rides through the wilderness, paying homage to ‘people who are true to themselves’, have turned their back to the crowd and found their own path.

Sailor Jerry makes rum and they want you to think punk rock every time to drink it, it wants to be the incarnation of this outside-the-lines idea by supporting musicians, tattoo artists and all types of creative people: ‘The creative life is one where you follow what’s inside you rather than what’s pushed on you from society, your family, the media and all the other things in the world that try to tell us who we’re supposed to be and what we’re supposed to do,’ they have declared on their website, and for the film they went to the desert, to the Salton Sea where you find this crazy and deeply original crowd of people that never take a shower and burn under a 105ºF sun! According to The Line Of Best Fit, the film features a montage of footage of ‘genuine skaters, bikers, musicians and classic car enthusiasts’ plus some original footage of the inspiration behind the brand.

At the top of this, ‘TV Eye” by the Stooges is the soundtrack, and the band’s performance of the song at the Cincinnati Pop Festival is included in the footage. ‘I really, really like the Sailor Jerry spot with The Stooges music from T.V. Eye in it… I’m really happy for people to hear and see us in this way. I like the tattoos too. The whole thing is stone Stooge’ said Iggy Pop.

The iconic punk star has previously worked in collaboration with Sailor Jerry to design clothes, yes, you heard that right, clothes, as if Iggy was wearing some! But he nevertheless designed ‘a premium denim vest, a hand-tooled leather belt with brass buckle and embroidered Sailor Jerry flash patches’, and I am sure everyone can look like a pirate with that on! They are available for a limited time here and at selected retailers. ‘People who are true to themselves may have scars, enemies and unpaid bills but they don’t have regrets’ they wrote on their website, and who else but Iggy Pop could better represent this?

I may be deeply into the system right now and not really outside the lines (well, I teach!) I may have never gone easy rider on everybody, but I don’t follow any crowd, never belonged to any group and every time I hear the words team-spirit or team-work, I cringe, it’s a problem, a curse and a strength, I am deeply individualist so I totally relate…
