Nicki Minaj causing controversy? No not from her music, which is, well, pretty much past that coupla weeks of prime we’ve heard of already, but something to do with Malcolm X and it begs an answer to the musical question: who can we not offend it 2014? Apparently , anybody can be offended by anything and wasn’t rap meant to be offensive? At least a little?
This was Minaj’s take on the story:
“What seems to be the issue now? Do you have a problem with me referring to the people Malcolm X was ready to pull his gun out on as Lookin Ass Niggaz? Well, I apologize. That was never the official artwork nor is this an official single. This is a conversation. Not a single. I am in the video shooting at Lookin Ass Niggaz and there happened to be an iconic photo of Malcolm X ready to do the same thing for what he believed in!!!! It is in no way to undermine his efforts and legacy. I apologize to the Malcolm X estate if the meaning of the photo was misconstrued. The word “nigga” causes so much debate in our community while the “nigga” behavior gets praised and worship. Let’s not. Apologies again to his family. I have nothing but respect an adoration for u. The photo was removed hours ago. Thank you.”
What a bunch of morons. Really, this is what you want to waste planet earth’s time on. I am fairly sick of Nicki admittedly but even so, this is ridiculous. One comment on Nicki’s Instagram noted: “It comes off as disgraceful and an overt display of ignorance. Beyond talking down to men who annoy her, Nicki’s lyrics aren’t thought-provoking and never represent the legacy of what Malcolm X stood for.”
I think we can survive being talked down to, for heaven’s sake.
