I know, I know. I completely forgot to write this up last week!!!
I Can’t Love – Lael Neale – Less country, more pop, it percolates and bops ever upwards. There is a fretful depression to it masked by a sugar sweet melody. In other words: it is really rock and roll. The ending is a vocal yodel of desire. Not her best but not bad. Track Of the Week.
Just The Way You Are – Kidz Bop Kids – Why is a girl singing this? Isn’t ther the suggestion of, er, gayness about it. What is this? Skins Bop Kids? It is a superb cover anyway.
Written On The Forehead – PJ Harvey – It takes a while but it gets there, a folk rock song for the 2011’s and an almost perfect chorus.
You Think You’re (John Fucking Lennon) – Glassjaw – One of those bands you think you know but you don’t really and this really takes awhile to get cooking. But when it does it explodes into noise and abberation like a screamcore Nine Inch Nailer.
Please Take – Wire – This is Wire??? Middle class, middle age, middle of the road, middle disappointment.
Sleazy (The Remix) (feat Andre 3000) – Ke$ha – This doesn’t work and the reason is because the rap has nothing to do with the song. And I am sick of the drum patterns.
Machine Gun Blues – Social Distortion – Two for two from these first rate rockers. Have they played town yet? I should catch em.
Bigger Than Me – White Lies – Not sure about these guys. A bit lugubrious for my taste. Like Depeche Mode on downers. Not bad, just a bit boring.
All Die Young – Smith Westerns – When did these guys become a drag. Pretty but empty. I wish they’d go back to drinking and getting slung outta night clubs.
Public Image – Pearl Jam – Great version if you’ve never heard the original.
June Hymn – The Decemberists – This ain’t January but it is still a beaut.
Separate Vacations – The Hold Steady – This is a minor work but an excellent reworking of a theme: rock songs and danceclubs going nowhere.
