Editors Note- claiming #2 of my Best finds of 2010, I knew we had to get words with this NJ hardcore band. I handed the job to Mary Magpie since she is the the mic of this genre’. Theme from i-Carly? You have to love the sheer honesty of this if not the playful nature of Mike King. I’m so excited for these guys, cannot wait to see them in March and wish them all a very successful 2011. -hel
I got the great opportunity to do an email interview with the vocalist, Mike King, of the band My Eyes Fall Victim.
“There’s a lot of people on your sites that keep on saying that they’re so excited for your album and they can’t wait. How does it feel to have such a great amount of people that are just begging to hear what you’ve produced?”
King : It’s really encouraging to see that because as we’ve been writing this album, our biggest fear has been that we’re going to put all this time, money, and energy into it, and that nobody will actually care when we release it. So it’s nice to see that people haven’t forgotten about us as we’ve been locked in our basement, writing the new stuff.”
“You guys seem to be pretty good at responding to fans online- how does it feel to have so many supportive people just flat-out loving your music?”
Mike: “We make an effort to respond to everyone that we can. It’s wonderful and really encouraging to see people digging our stuff because that’s why we do this whole thing in the first place: to make music that we and our fans enjoy.”
“Why the hardcore genre rather than anything else?”
King: “We all have pretty broad musical tastes, but hardcore is the one genre that we all definitely connect and agree on. Plus, we wanted to do something that encompassed hard and soft music, and it’s much easier to throw a soft section at hardcore fans than it is to throw a hardcore section at soft rock fans.”
“You guys seem to have quite a variety of influences listed on your Facebook page-Magic the Gathering, Fall Out Boy, A Day To Remember- what about specific people not related to music? (Family, friends, figures)”
Mike: “I think the one non-musical influence we can all agree on is our great friend, Dan Martin. He was an original member of the band, but left to pursue his art career. His work ethic since then has been unparalleled, and we draw a lot of our energy from that. Different career paths, but the same principles apply to both.”
“Why’d you want to be a musician?”
King: “I think at first we were all into playing music as just a hobby. But there was a certain point early on when we realized just how addicting the stage is, and I think that helped us decide that we never wanted to give this up.”
“What’s one thing that occupies you when you’re not making music?”
Mike: “We all have different hobbies, of course, but as a band, Magic the Gathering has been our communal hobby. It’s also been the biggest enemy for writing this record. It’s very easy to waste a few hours with that game.”
“Where did your band name come from? Did it ever change?”
King: “Our band name came from the mind of Dan Martin, our former guitarist. We were all sitting around brainstorming names and he just said “My Eyes Fall Victim.” We all responded with, “Uh, what does it mean?” To which he said, “Whatever you think it means.” We all loved it so it stuck. Years and years ago, we used to go by “Beyond Repair,” which we think may have cursed us, because we always run into at least one technical problem at every show, so we inevitably blame it on our former name.”
“What are you looking forward to the most in 2011?”
Mike: “We’re looking forward to putting this new record out, and all that it entails. We can’t wait to see how people respond to it. We’re so excited to shop it around and to see what comes from that. We’re pumped to go on tour in support of it. The new record will mean a lot of great things for us.”
“Do you have any advice for aspiring musicians?”
King: “Just keep at it. Our band first had its roots in “Beyond Repair” about six or so years ago. Our music back then was laughable. And look at us now, six years later: our music is still laughable. So, obviously the key is to keep trying for at least six years!”
Lastly, I asked him the iPod question.
Mike said…..
“Well, I won’t speak for my bandmates, but the most embarrassing song on my iPod is also one of my most listened to tracks: “Leave It All to Me,” the theme song to iCarly.”
Mike King, and My Eyes Fall Victim are not only a band to keep your eye on, but one to definitely see live if they’re in your area.
