Spider Bags Song Review

“Long White Desert Rose” off Spider Bag’s Goodbye Cruel World, Hello Crueler World, is how it all comes together. This is the song the Black Crowes haven’t come within a million miles of since the days they were covering Otis Redding; this is what Jim James should be doing instead of fucking around with MOF; this is the song Brian Jonestown Massacre have kept on failing to deliver. This could be off Exile. It is just unfucking real. A Southern boogie jamasaurus replete with wooo woooos in the background like they just stepped outta Beggars Banquet and a bang up acoustic guitar and wild chord changes which are actually pretty complicated here and there with a brilliant run about a minute and a half in. the guitars sound different from what you’re used to today, they sound more organic and stringy less dubbed and overwhelming. Listen to a current rock band, even a good one, even a Say Anything, and the songs are too thick: the guitars are piled on top of each other and you can’t fit a thought about them.

On “Long White Desert Rose” the Spider Bags sound not old fashioned but other fashioned. They are like a top rock group you imagined, they’re like a band Jonathem Lethem or Nick Hornsby (or Lester Bangs) invented: it is too good to be true; they are so fucking great.
