With “Discoverer”, off the upcoming Collapse Into Now, REM sound like REM circa “Crush With Eyeliner” with a touch of Life’s Rich Pageant thrown in.
And it is time for me to confess.
This isn’t in any sense a BAD album, it is medium cool R.E.M. Nut I can’t take Stipe’s voice: I hate the way he phrases, he’s too cute by half and R.E.M. have a dozen tricks and they recycle em over and over again. The “nanananas” nauseate me and the buzzy guitars and the way the band breaks in a long verse in. And then he uses the naaaas as bridge.
Ugh.
I’ve heard it a million times.
I wonder if I heard “Kenneth” or “religion” or “E-Bow The Letter” for the first time today if I wouldn’t hate it.
