Glam rock made bi-sexuality (you’ve heard of coming out: rock stars came half out) cool and its step brother homo was waiting patiently in the wings before pub and punk rock, and the literal kiss of death AIDs sent everybody back in the closet. Glam made gay happen not really because of the feyness of the sound, but because the clothes, the androgynous fashionscape, as opposed to the vicious b&d of punk or vacuous retro rocker punters, was open ended sexually.
In other words, it doesn’t matter as much that Lou Reed sang about he was a she as that bovver boy Slade were in high heels and mascara and a mountain of men followed them.
If you are dressed for confusion, confusion might occur. If David Bowie liked boys (sometimes) so might you.
Gay was cool because
a) it looked cool
and
b) rock stars were bi by the boatload.
Gay was such a great career move, bands like hetero rockers Sweet pretended to be gay. It was a career move. And it would never happen again. Homosexuality was illegal at the time so that added the prick up your ears dollop of cream on top of the perfumed and powdered penis of glam rock.
Glam rock as rock was screaming sweet melodies with a walloping bass.
Most of glam was OK nothing great surrounding the real keeper, Bowie. Lou Reed, Iggy Pop. Glam rolled into disco, rock rolled into punk, the two sides went to war and the moment passed.
But glam was when Gay rock ruled.
