Fitz And The Tantrums (and Daryl Hall) – by Alyson Camus

Daryl Hall, from Hall and Oates (is it necessary to mention this?) has a monthly web show (Helen Bach wrote about it here) which Hall started in late 2007, as he just wanted to play gigs with friends and put them on the internet. Numerous performers have had their time on ‘Live From Daryl’s House’, from well-known artists (Smokey Robinson, Robby Krieger and Ray Manzarek, Nick Lowe, K.T. Tunstall, Todd Rundgren, Travis McCoy, …) to new-on-the scene musicians (Mutlu, Chromeo, Diane Birch…).

Last week, it was Fitz and The Tantrums’ turn, the band Woody and I have written about quite a lot on rock nyc, and Fitz, aka Michael Fitzpatrick, the guy I interviewed last summer! Cool!

It was a whole session with no less than seven songs, which really was a dream come true for Fitz, and if you listen to what Daryl Hall has to say about the Tantrums band,  the admiration is reciprocal, as he even says Fitz ‘has been called the new generation Daryl Hall’. So everything seems nice and friendly and the result is quite enjoyable to listen to as both soul men’s voices complete each other playfully and dynamically,… some real chemistry there! And I should not forget about Noelle’s addition.

They played Fitz and the Tantrums’ songs of course but they also dug into Hall’s catalog with ‘Perkiomen’ and ‘Girl I love you’, very deep actually, as this latter one is the first song Daryl Hall ever recorded.

You can watch the whole session here, with a lot of in between the scenes where it is question of applesauce making,… seems delicious too:

Er, when I wrote about the band back in August, Iman titled my post ‘Fitz And The Tantrums New Album: Cryptic Average White Band (and Hall And Oates) Song Titles’ because of the similarities between some of their song titles. Quite a visionary prediction!

Last thing, if you live in Los Angeles, Fitz and the Tantrums are playing at the El Rey Theater on Nov 17!
