Listening to Yeasayers pretty good remix of Florence And The Machines “Dog Days Are Over”, I am still struck how even a pretty good remix is a seriesof tics and repetitions: the working out of a musical phrase through bytes and samples of the song.
It is a good idea but it is running the course and not realizing what he was on to with Versions was Mark Ronson’s undoing. At heart Ronson is a DJ and what he did was to remix popular songs by any means necessary. The Kaiser Chief’s “Oh My God” version…. with Lily Allen on vocals, “Valerie” with Amy Winehouse, that “Toxic”: this is very major stuff, it is big time remixing that PUT THE WORLD ON NOTICE.
Compared to Yeasayers bleep, blooping, stutteringly phrased Florence… you can’t compare it. There is no comparison.
