2007: Before The End Of The World, A Playlist -by Iman Lababedi

Ah yes, 2007. You could insult the president with impunity, Wall Street hadn’t evolved into a Welfare recipient, rock nyc didn’t exist, and I had an assistant.
Oh, and I was listening to music of course.
1. Tourist Trap – Bright Eyes – You take from songs what you need. I needed: “There are people here but you are gone”.
2. For A Pessimist, I’m Really Optimistic – Paramore – Yup, a real good Hayley Williams performance. I didn’t realize at the time it was just about her only one.
3. See You Again – Miley Cyrus – Miley’s classic best. Alix Wartell used to sing it for me all the time.
4.  Just Pray – For Science – Didja read Alyson’s Bad Religion post? Until you can solve the question of infinite regression everything is a question mark -scientists think that because an object has physical properties it wasn’t invented outside of nature. Maybe. Maybe not. In the mean time, praying isn’t the worst concept in the world and Joe nails it clean on this one.
5. Piece Of Me – Britney Spears – And if you don’t believe in miracles, explain this song.
6. The Rainbow – Apples In Stereo – Ever since I saw em open for Television I’ve felt these guys were big time. And here they certainly are. But other places? Too fussy for pop.
7. Two – Ryan Adams – Ryan in country balladering form and it can teach EVERYONE how to do it.
8. All Summer Long – Kid Rock – A most inspired sample. What’s the bet he has learnt NOTHING from it.
9. Our Song – Taylor Swift – As country as Taylor was at the time. Meaning, lotsa Daisy Dukes and Tim McGraw references, and sweet time love, and Nashville skyline. But not really country.
10. Ladies Of Cambridge – Vampire Weekend – Yep, the other song on the “Mansard Roof” single  and they were already fully formed.
11. Rich Girls – The Virgins – Here is a clue guys: CHANGE YOUR NAME
12. In A Moment – Ray Davies – His last hurrah.
13. Everything’s Just Wonderful – Lily Allen – And now she is barefoot and pregnant.
14. Bopping For Apples – Regina Spektor – I can’t remember names and I can’t remember faces.
15. Rise Above – Dirty Projectors – Put the pop world on notice.
16. Hey Baby – Falu – Maybe the best song of 2007.
17. Powerstripe – Tigercity – Some bands are just baffling. Why have these soul guys not broken through?
18. Roc Boys (And The Winner Is…) – Jay-Z – His last flat out masterpiece.
19. Woman Kind – Annie Lennox – Genius but not realized as such.
20. Love Don’t Live Here Any More – Lady Antebellum – Gifted popular songwriting.
