The Fillmore East was on 2nd Avenue at 6th Street -I guess that’s where they have Blueman group today. And the great rock and roll Mecca, and counterpart to the even more fabled Fillmore West , was programmed by the legendary promoter Bill Graham throughout its short existence from march 8th, 1968 thru June 27th, 1971.
Larry Schneiderman, a legendary advertising guy in his own write, (and my supervisor for over 20 years), spent his college nights hanging out there. So much so he was recognized by Bill as a regular and got in at Filmore West for free during sold out concerts.
Many people claim to have been at Fillmore East -to have seen Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Mother’s Of Invention, CSN&Y right after Woodstock (Larry was also at Woodstock but I will leave that for a different post). Not everybody has the ticket stubs and souvenir brochures to prove it.
I will be sitting down with Larry at some point to discuss the Fillmore East and live rock music in the late 1960s at some point soon.
Till then, check out the brochure above and wish you had been there!
