Dark Star Ochrstra is a Grateful Dead tribute band that was formed in the mid 90s in Chicago.
What sets them apart from all other cover/tribute bands is one thing; attention to detail.
Not only do they play the identical set list, song by song in order, but they take it a step further, ( Bob Weirs new band) and even do impovs based off of famous Dead shows in past. They try their best to keep all the musical equipment true to the era of the original sound. And for an added bonus at the end of each show they announce the date and venue of original show just covered.
A very cool way for a cover band to operate, a much different feel from Zosa, ( Led Zeppelin cover band) doing a ton of blow backstage before they played in Wilmington a few years back.
DSO has played with Bob Weir, amongst other Dead members before, so at least on paper they pass the “were a Grateful Dead cover band” test.
I’m excited for the show I’m going to see, one which originally was rocked before I was born.
However, with the doors opening at 4, and DSO hitting the stage at 5, ( yes an early show indeed), I’m writing this during my 3:30 marketing class, and Dr. Porter just called me out in class for texting.
“I’m not texting, I’m in preparation for Dark Star Orchestra.”
He was blatantly jealous. After class he informed me he had many opportunities to see The Grateful Dead in their prime, he regrets not going and wishes more than anything he was joining me tonight, if only for small taste of the real thing.
See you there sports fans. This one’s for Dr. Porter.
