New Music Week, Septeber 13th, 2010: Instant Sex Karma by Iman Lababedi

The Wild Farewell – Gasoline Silver – WHO ARE THESE GUYS? A new Bob Dylan for the electronic age. TRACK OF THE WEEK

All My Friends Are Insects – Weezer – Recorded for a kids show, it is a pretty funny and sweet natured rock for the wee ones. The Wiggles better watch out.

Only Girl (In The World) – Rihanna - Excellent drum pattern (actually two interlocking) and a return to form for the robotic Rella who sucked so bad at MSG earlier this year.

Closer – The Gracious Fewer – Goth hard rock and a bit obvious.

Loca – Shakira – In Spanish, and yet another return to form. A Merengue blast of horns and synth and Shakira chillin’ her eccentricities for a bound to be a hit on home turf.

One In A Million – Ne-Yo – His problem is his his material and this is up to nothing very much but his soprano when he goes up an octave is lovely.

Crystallised – The xx – Hey John, I think we’re gonna hafta seriously differ on this cats. A complete snooze.

Digging For Something – Superchunk – Should be as big as Weezer: a classic alt rock band who have been laying out one great album after another. Terrific song.

Trap Talk – Gucci Mane – Is it me or is the new Gucci a dog?

Ruling Me – Weezer – Trust me: any song that begins “ring ring goes the telephone” is gonna rock and this is Weezer’s best moment in over a year.

Sex Karma (feat Solange Knowles)  – Of Montreal – Excellent and very strange and beautiful alt-soul something or the other. With Solange.

Hot Mess – Chromeo – Love the limey chicks monologue and the dance groove is complete: even the hooks have hook. It’s like there is three of them interlocking in the back of your mind.
