Nothing beats scoring free Green Day concert tickets 2 days before the show. Even better is scoring pit passes when you least expect it. This would be the second time I saw them. AFI was playing with them which made me even more excited to be there.
AFI came onto the stage and Davey and Jade were still attractive as ever. Davey’s flawless voice rung in my ears and I was proud to call myself a fan. They had a white cloth backdrop, and I expected for some funky lighting to happen, but they just stuck to white lights. They could’ve done a lot more with the light show but their energy made up for it. When they were playing their newer stuff, it seemed that they had gotten about 10 times more mainstream then good ol’ “December Underground”. The best part of their set was when they played “Miss Murder”. It’s so much better live than on the record. No doubt happy to be there and opening up for Green Day, they ran around, interacted with the audience, and the music was flawless. Not an ounce of disappointment.
Green Day’s drunk bunny, just like last year, stumbled onto the stage and put on quite the show of his own. It’s incredible how they can entertain thousands of people without even being on stage. The lights went down, the crowd got louder, and they ran onto the stage, smiling like crazy, and started playing. They played everything from “Holiday” to “Brain Stew” to “Know Your Enemy”. When they started playing “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” and Billie stopped singing on the chorus, he heard that the entire arena was absolutely screaming the words back at him. He almost started to cry and said “definitely louder than D.C., I’ll tell ya that” responded by whoops and hollers. He constantly said “I LOVE YOU CONNECTICUTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!” and everyone reciprocated that in their own way. Playing crowd pleasers “Saint Jimmy” and “Give Me Novocaine”, not forgetting “Brain Stew” and having the crowd go crazy, everyone was having a great time. They even played the beginnings of “Highway To Hell” and “You Really Got Me”, laughing and goofing around. The light show was outstanding, but not distracting. Very colourful and it added much more to the show. As for the pyrotechnics, they could’ve done a lot more. A few short blasts of fire here and there, but nothing too big. Another negative note is that sometimes they seemed completely drained of energy, but saved themselves and picked it back up again. I say that last year’s light show and pyrotechnics were much better, but they still managed to entertain.
Green Day isn’t too old to rock quite yet. They still got it in ’em.
