OK well its Paul Cook, drummer of the Sex Pistols, Kim Carnes and Carlos Santana’s birthday but most importantly on this date July 20, 1940 Billboard was born. Yes 70 years ago today our likes were confirmed and we were unified as one as a comprehensive music rating chart.
Billboard magazine had only published best seller lists that were sent in by the individual record companies. But with this brand new method- all record companies would be tossed in the mix and a true top listing would be created. Validation! Everyone likes this so its MUST be good!
Their first number one song was ‘I’ll Never Smile Again’ by Frank Sinatra and the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra.
