Lyric videos aren’t new and there’s nothing really funny in this one, but it has its simple charm. Californis duo Best Coast has released a new video for their song ‘This Lonely Morning’, the first song off their last EP ‘Fade Away’, via Funny or Die, for some weird reason. In the video, songstress Bethany Cosentino and bass player Bobb Bruno are having fun in a dueling tennis match, while they are rather playing air guitar with rackets and reading the lyrics off yellow tennis balls.
Bethany’s wardrobe thigh-high black stockings, plaid shirt and platform shoes are totally inappropriate for such a thing, but the Joni Mitchell vintage jacket is cute. The whole thing seems to have been filmed on a budget string, somewhere on a local tennis court in a Los Angeles backyard and the highest cost of the video may have been the many tennis balls sharpied for the circumstance.
It’s not the kind of video that will make you ponder hours for some deep hidden meaning, it just reflects their style as the two are having a good time and the result is just like anything Best Coast does: it lacks any pretension, it’s playful and laid back, but efficient. At least it allows you to appreciate the song, a sun-drenched plain pop song, with an effervescent sweetness mixed with Bethany’s strong vocals. It works as a song, but as a video I am not that sure it was totally necessary, but at least it is there to remind us to listen to ‘Fade Away’.
